Why Was My Ramp Card Declined and How Do I Fix It?

Quick answer: Ramp card declines are almost always caused by one of five things: no funds assigned to the card, a fraud alert, wrong card details entered at checkout, a spending limit that was exceeded, or a card that was never activated. Most can be fixed in minutes from the Ramp app.

Ramp is the credit card and expense platform your church uses. When a card declines, the reason is recorded in Ramp — so the fix is usually quick once you know the cause.

The 6 Most Common Reasons a Ramp Card Declines

1. No funds or a locked fund

The card has no spending money assigned to it, or the fund it draws from has been locked or closed (this often happens when a budget period ends). Fix: Ask Church Admin to unlock the fund or link your card to an active fund.

2. Fraud alert

Ramp's security system flagged the purchase as suspicious (common when traveling or buying from a new vendor). Fix: Reply "Yes" to the text message Ramp sends you, or log in to the Ramp app and unlock your card. Then try the purchase again.

3. Wrong card details at checkout

A mistyped card number, CVV security code, expiration date, or billing address. Fix: Log in to Ramp, view the card details, and re-enter them exactly as shown.

4. Spending limit exceeded

The purchase is larger than the limit set on your card. Fix: Request a limit increase through Ramp or from Church Admin before retrying the purchase.

5. Card restricted to a specific vendor

Some virtual cards are set up to work with only one merchant (for example, a card created just for Zoom). Using it anywhere else will decline. Fix: Use the correct card for that vendor, or request a new virtual card for the new merchant.

6. Card not activated yet

New physical cards must be activated before first use. Fix: Log in to the Ramp app and activate the card, then retry.

If the Card Keeps Declining Everywhere

If your card declines at multiple vendors even with correct details, the card itself may need to be replaced. Church Admin can issue you a new virtual card instantly through the Ramp dashboard so you are never stuck without a way to pay.
